Senior Sustaining Engineer, Battery Design & Architecture
Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support battery products entering or already in production. This role sits within Sustaining Engineering and combines hands-on mechanical design with failure analysis, production support, and engineering change ownership.
You will investigate product and manufacturing issues, identify root causes, develop design solutions, validate changes, and carry those changes through engineering release and implementation in production. The role works closely with manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and engineering teams.
Candidates with direct battery pack or module design experience and a strong sustaining engineering background will align best with this position.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a mechanical design engineering resource for battery products in production.
- Investigate product, design, and manufacturing issues and develop engineering solutions.
- Create and modify 3D models and 2D drawings using CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX).
- Own design changes from initial investigation through validation, engineering release, and production implementation.
- Perform failure and root-cause analysis and translate findings into practical design improvements.
- Develop technical project plans and schedules for engineering activities.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, including non-conformance reports (NCRs), supplier deviation requests (SDRs), and engineering change requests (ECRs).
- Write and coordinate engineering change orders (ECOs) and support CRB/CCB change-management processes.
- Manage BOM creation and revisions across a high-mix product line.
- Participate in material review board (MRB) activities and provide engineering guidance on material disposition.
- Partner with manufacturing and quality teams on first-article inspections, line trials, pilot builds, and production issues.
- Provide DFA/DFM input to improve manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and product quality.
- Support design specifications, FMEAs, DOEs, and verification and validation activities.
- Work directly with component suppliers to troubleshoot issues, evaluate samples, and understand the cost and timing impact of design changes.
- Provide hands-on engineering support when troubleshooting mechanical and electromechanical systems.
Job Requirements
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies in a product-development or production environment.
- Experience supporting products already in production through sustaining engineering, product improvement, or engineering change activities.
- Direct experience with battery packs, battery modules, or similar complex electromechanical products is strongly preferred.
- Experience performing failure analysis and root-cause investigations.
- Strong 3D CAD and 2D drafting experience, including GD&T.
- CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE / CATIA V6 experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with engineering change processes, including ECRs and ECOs.
- Understanding of BOM management and configuration changes.
- Knowledge of both high- and low-volume manufacturing methods.
- Experience working directly with manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams.
- Hands-on technical experience using mechanical and electrical measurement equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, isolation testing equipment, and data-acquisition systems.
- Ability to independently investigate technical issues, develop solutions, and carry changes through implementation.
Strong Candidates Will Bring
This role is best suited for an engineer who has worked at the intersection of battery design and sustaining engineering. You should be comfortable moving between CAD, the production floor, suppliers, testing, and engineering documentation.
Experience focused primarily on new product development or manufacturing engineering without ownership of sustaining design changes may not provide the depth needed for this position.
